The Most Inspiring Video You’ll Ever Watch

I had seen this video before in it’s entirety, it just never crossed my mind to link to it here on my blog. This one is a shorter version than the original and was on the Oprah show a while back.

I dare you to watch this video and try to not be inspired.

EDIT: This is the second video I posted and for whatever reason they keep getting removed from YouTube. So, if you’d like to see the video, just do a Google search for “Randy Pausch Last Lecture” and you’ll find quite a few. Thanks

Changing Your Design Could Hurt You

This is a topic I’ve thought long and hard about over the last few months. I’ve currently got three sites I’m working on, hence my lack of posting (I’m sure you’ve noticed), but once these sites are live, I’m planning a major overhaul of Random Jabber. Random Jabber has been online now for going on a year and to be honest, I’m just tired of looking at this design. The only thing that has crossed my mind is the possibility of creating a new design that many of the readers are not fond of, because even though the design isn’t everything, I think it does account for when talking about the success of a site. If I’m going through with a redesign, I definitely want something people will enjoy and is a reflection on my design skills.

Will Getting in Over Your Head Make You Better at What You Do?

Every evening on my way home from my day job, I enjoy listening to the Covino and Rich show on Sirius Satellite Radio. A couple of weeks ago, one of the topics on the show: “will getting in over your head, make you better?”

I think too many times, people simply continue to do what they’re used to and never push their self to do better. A lot of people may not agree with me, but I believe you never know what you’re capable of unless you push yourself outside your comfort zone. I only wish it were that easy to push yourself outside that zone.

Lessons Learned From the Game of Golf

Majority of people that have never played the game of golf, don’t understand it. One of the main arguments I hear from people who are not familiar with the game: “I just don’t get the idea of hitting a little white ball, chasing it, and hitting it again.”

To someone who’s never played the game, I could see how they might get the impression that golf is simply the process of hitting a little white ball around an open field for 5 hours. With this article, I hope to enlighten a few people to some other aspects of golf that are not obvious to someone who doesn’t play, and may not be obvious to a lot of people that do play. The lessons learned from golf are way outside the grounds of succeeding at a sport, it’s about succeeding in everything you do.

I Guess Logo Design Isn’t That Good in Lexington Either?

LexGo and FedEx Logos

Just a few posts ago I wrote Is Web Design as Bad in Your City as it is Here?, an article that discusses the dire state of web design here in Lexington, KY. Well, it looks like logo design in Lexington, isn’t much better.

Have a look at the image in this article to see what I’m talking about. The top logo is that of LexGo.com, which is portal for entertainment in Lexington and around central Kentucky. While watching television the other day, an ad for their site came on and I immediately noticed what I’m sure everyone else has noticed by now, the strikingly similar concept behind both logos.

It’s a Subliminal Message I Tell Ya!

For anyone not familiar with the concept behind the FedEx logo, which is one of the most popular logos of all time. The concept is that when you take the uppercase “E” and the lowercase “x,” an arrow pointing to the right is formed.

“The arrow could be promoted as a symbol of speed and precision.”

You can read more about the thought process that went into designing the FedEx logo from the creator himself at The Man Behind the FedEx Logo

Lets Get Original

Anyone working professionally as a designer, whether that be web design, or logo design, should know not to rip-off other people’s work. Easy rule, right? For some, I guess it’s no so easy.

Now, I talk about logo design in Lexington simply because LexGo is a Lexington based website. I have no idea who did the logo and for all I know the designer could be living in Florida. I’m simply bringing this up because the concept of the LexGo logo was clearly borrowed from that of the FedEx logo. At any rate, even if the designer doesn’t reside in Lexington, the state of logo design here is till bad! Just do a Google search for “logo design Lexington Kentucky” if you don’t believe me.

I’m sure the people doing the ripping would be the first to complain if their original work was to be ripped by someone else.

You Can Be Inspired, Just Don’t Copy

Sometimes the creative juices just aren’t flowing and I would be lying if I said I didn’t browse other designs looking for inspiration. I even have a folder created on my computer where I save screenshots of logos and websites and keep them packed away for a rainy day when I need some inspiration. The big kicker here is that you can definitely be inspired without ripping the main concept of the logo.

Your Turn to Talk

What does everyone think? Am I the only one that sees this logo ripping off the idea of the FedEx logo? Or am I just overreacting and jumping to conclusions?
