NiceStylesheet Logo

NiceStylesheet Logo

I’ve owned the domain nicestylesheet.com for a about a year and a half now with the idea that I would turn it into a CSS design showcase. I know, CSS showcases are so last year, but ever since I discovered tableless design, I’ve loved it. It’s taken me three years of hard work to get to the point I’m currently at with tableless design and I’ve always wanted to do a site showcase. Nice Stylesheet will be a CSS showcase with a little added twist to differentiate it from all of the other CSS showcase out there. My goal is to not only give people a place to gather inspiration for their own designs, but to assist them in developing their designs.

I’ve developed a logo for Nice Stylesheet and I’m looking for some feedback. I’m a big fan of minimalistic design in both logos and websites, and I hope to someone that knows nothing about the site, this logo will get the point across as to the site topic (of course, they would need some CSS background to understand the curly brackets).

I’m wanting to think outside the box a little and go with a slightly riskier color scheme. My favorite color is blue and it never fails, in every design I do, whether it be a website or logo, I always come back to some kind of blue color scheme. You definitely don’t see many pink color schemes, so hopefully this will also set the site apart from the pack.

So, there you have it. Let me know what you think.

I would make it so users can bookmark pages they like, and tag them.

sp: Can you elaborate a little more on your thoughts? I’m not quite sure what you’re referring to.

I like the concept, and if you adopted a blog with it, and wrote about grid design, colour scheming, css tutorials, etc, then you might have a chance to push it to the top. A voting system, similar to Digg, where a design can be pushed to the front page, might give it an edge over others.

The colour scheme might work, if (like anything) it’s well executed, but I’m not sure about the logo.

P.S. If you could change the url, it would be appreciated smile

Hey Armen, thanks for the thoughts. Everything you mentioned are things that I had not thought of. I especially like the idea of being able to push a design to the front page through a voting system! That’s great.

Yeah, I like the logo but I don’t like the logo, ya know? I’m definitely not attached to it in that it’s definitely the bottom line and knowing me, it will change about 10 more times, lol.

BTW: url is changed. grin

I think it’s an AMAZING idea.
I really like the idea for help designing - it would definitely set it apart.
I would use it a lot.

And furthermore, if you want help maintaining/designing/wateva - I’ll be more than happy to do so!  :-D

As an after thought…  and I don’t know all that you’ve considered so far…
If it could be designed in such a way where site visitors as well as site admins can contribute help - the it could be head and shoulders above other showcases.  :-D

And…
I wouldn’t go with simply a white and pink color scheme.  I’d throw in a third color.
Most of the best/better sites have three or four colors in their color scheme - like DesignSnack.com.

Gosh…
At this rate, I’ll have given you fifty comments by the time I go to bed.  lol

But do you have any idea on how you’ll be setting up the submission portion?  Er…  Meaning…
Will people be able to automatically submit their sites for consideration and rating?
If so…  how will you be doing that?

Good domain name, especially for stylesheets since you will have a css showcase.  I discovered CSS less than a month ago and I love it.

If there’s just one thing I’d change about your logo, it’d be to drop the semi-colon. It looks too much like a winking smiley. Perhaps that’s what you wanted?

There are quite a few logos that use brackets in that fashion, but who am I to talk? wink

David,
The reason he’s using the semi-colon is because it is needed for CSS.

Here’s a general idea of a CSS segment:

#text{color: #000000;}

So that’s why there’s the semi-colon.

Brian: You’ve got to slow down with the comments, you’re going to crash my server! grin

Thanks for offering to help with it. I just might take you up on that. The idea I was thinking about as far as design help may or may not work, I don’t know. It would be difficult to say. I may make another post about this soon asking for more critiques on my idea.

The system for submitting sites wouldn’t really be an automated one, but would be a manual review process. I would have a simple contact form made up and visitors could submit their site or other sites and I would review it, if I like it, it goes up on the site. I want to make it as simple as possible and do it in such a way that I can get it online as quick as possible.

Dennis: Thanks, I really like the name too! Yeah, that’s the goal, get it online and then tweak. I’m coming to finally learn that lesson, although I had to learn it the hard way. Random Jabber was delayed for nearly a year simply because I couldn’t decide on a design. Just a year wasted. I’m not doing that again with any site.

Maple: Thanks, I appreciate it. Yeah, CSS is great isn’t it? I was hooked after about six months or so when the light bulb finally went off in my head and certain techniques started to click.

David: Yeah, I wasn’t sure about the semi-colon but I think if I remove it, it would take away from the idea behind the logo to resemble a CSS style? I do see what you’re saying about the winking smiley and it’s bugging me! Why’d you have to go and bring that up? wink

CSS is great for making websites!  I still don’t know enough about it so learning anything is great.  It seems you have a lot of knowledge of CSS, which is great…the learner curve never seems to plateau-out lol.

Hey Joe, yeah it’s great but it can take a while to learn. I’ve been designing with CSS now for almost three years, so it’s been a long road. If you seen some of my first attempts at CSS you’d laugh. They were horrible. Just like anything else, the more you do it the better you get at it. Keep with it. If you need help with anything, let me know.

You may already have them, but I own Bulletproof Web Design, CSS Mastery, and Beginning CSS Techniques (all found in my recommended section at the bottom) and they are great books for learning CSS. Might give them a try.

Thanks for the compliments on the logo. grin

Hm…
I would caution you in a manual submission.
What if it took off?
You could be getting, 10, 20, 50, or 100+ submissions a day.

I would consider trying to devise a way that would allow automated submissions.

I have an idea…
You could set up a blog, but manipulate it in such a way that when people submit a comment - it comes up on the home page or something like that.
Then you could probably add a rating mod or soething like that…

I dunno - I’m still mulling it over.

Well, the way I look at it is either way it will be a manual process. If people submit designs and then I have to go through each one individually to select which ones make it to the site, or if people submit designs and they are automatically added to the site and I have to manually go back through and remove the ones I don’t like, that don’t validate, don’t have anything to do with css, etc. then the time spent would be about the same I think.  Either way I’m manually going through each design.

Yeah, the comments is a good idea. I thought about doing something like that, but I’ve noticed that on CSS galleries, people are not really into commenting. They are there for inspiration for their own design and couldn’t care less about a discussion on the design, ya know?

21Brian Purkiss jabbered...

Yes… I do know.
However that is where yours could differ. With the purpose of the site is to be discussion & what not…
I would look at DesignSnack. They don’t have much discussion however…
But you could set it up in two catagories - one for CSS help (works in progress) and the other for completed work.
If you’re the one who checks everything and all that - then what’s the point of submission and rating and all that?  It might as well be CSS Sites that Deron Likes or something like that.

And I’m sorry if I sound a little pushy or…  er… something…  like that…  but… er…  I’m not.
Uh, yeah.

I dunno.
Just some thoughts of mine.

Nah, I’m not taking what you’re saying as pushy. I welcome the discussion. wink

What you’re saying sounds really good in theory, but the truth in the matter is that it would take a lot of work on my part. I want to get the site online asap and have some kind of functionality up and going and I can always add to it later. Besides DesignSnack, the other galleries I’ve seen are a manual submission process. It wouldn’t necessarily be “CSS sites that Deron likes” because I wouldn’t be that harsh on the designs. Basically I would check to see if it was in fact a CSS design and then I would verify that the site validates to standards. From there it would be posted where it could be voted on.

An automated system not only would be a lot more difficult to program (I’m not a programmer at all, so I’d have to get someone to do it and that costs money) plus a lot more spam would potentially come in, in that any and everyone could post a design and have it automatically submitted.

I like the way you think though! grin

23Brian Purkiss jabbered...

I’m no programmer either.
That’s why I was trying to come up with a way to use something that is already in existance…  like some comment thing…

But you do have a point - get it out there and as it grows, wory about it then.

There’s two reasons why I’m so interested in this.
First of all because I think it’s an amazing idea and would be awesome.  I would use it often - for advice and to give advice (even though it’s limited…).
And secondly I’m trying to do something along those same lines - Blogging Etiquette.  It focuses on blogs (duh) - rewarding those who keep the blogging world a friendly and safe place.

At any rate - keep us updated on NiceStylesheet!!!  I’m really interested on where it will go!
And again, if you want help - feel free to drop me an e-mail!

Hey Brian. I would love to tell you yes, but that’s just not the case. I just haven’t taken the time to site down and do it (I know, shame on me).

I’ll keep ya posted. Hopefully as the winter months approach, I will have more time to focus on other sites as I won’t want to be golfing every waking moment of the day. smile

Take your time, and don’t rush it.  You could ruin a lot of the bang if you thow out a half-job.

Nice logo, I’ll not be able to comment much on that because I’m not one of the professional designers smile But you surprised me by telling your love with blue. And yes, Blue is my favorite too! Blue gives you eye pleasing look! So you don’t have to struggle with its color scheme much! BTW, on the style sheet idea, I have been thinking for a while to get a new table less redesign for my site!
