Page Rank is Enough to Make a Blogger Go Nuts!
By starting this blog in May, I just missed the last Page Rank update. Supposedly, since the last update, this is the longest Google has ever gone without an update. From my understanding, Page Rank usually updates about once every three months. It’s now going on six months and still no update and it’s enough to drive a blogger nuts.
The Zero Laughs at Me
When I visit Random Jabber to reply to comments or test something with the design, I’m always eager to check out my status bar (where the Page Rank for FireFox add-on sits) to see if it’s green and has a number beside it (something other than zero) and I’ve been disappointed every single time for the last six months. I can’t help but feel a little bummed when I see that big fat zero looking back at me when I visit. It just sits there in my status bar taunting me!
I Care
I care because everyone knows that advertisers won’t look at your site as a possibility to advertise on until you have a Page Rank. Page Rank might be flawed to a certain extent, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a main factor in what advertisers look at when making the decision to advertise on your site. Before you go bashing me, no, making money isn’t the driving force behind why I blog, but I won’t lie (like some people), it would be nice to make a little extra for my efforts.
But I Don’t Care
For all I know Google may decide to stop updating Page Rank? It really does no good to worry about something that I cannot control. I mean, I’m not rich currently, so if my blog’s Page Rank stays at zero and I never sell the first ad spot, it’s not the end of the world and I’m no worse off than I am now. I will continue to do what I love to do and maybe one of these days I’ll see a number other than zero staring back at me.
What Do You Think?
What do you think will happen if Google does in fact decide to do away with Page Rank? What will advertisers look at then as an indication of a site’s popularity?
Have you seen any kind of an update yet?

I’m still waiting for my first PR too, but I’m not holding my breath for a good one. I don’t plan on putting adverts on my site, so it’s not too important for me, but it would be nice to know.

I think so many of us are waiting with you. If Google does get rid of PageRank, it will definitely change the landscape of advertising as it is today.

As you know as a reader of my blog the Page Rank system has been “mean” to me the last couple of months with no real explaination. From a healthy 4 to a 3 and now to a page rank of 2.
I think the days of Page rank is over ...

Brian: Yeah, that’s all we can do. You’ve really got to be stubborn as a blogger and keep posting content even when you may feel like no one is reading and when you feel like your site will never get a good ranking, whether that be in Page Rank or Alexa or whatever.
Kink Jacob: Yeah, that would be nice! Everyone gets 10’s! Seriously, it would be nice though if someone with the know how could develop a true measure of the worth of a website. Something where the numbers couldn’t be altered so easily as it seems they are in Page Rank and other tools like it. Something on a schedule of sorts that was updated according to that schedule instead of “ahh, we’ll update it when we feel like it” sort of thing.
Jenny: Yeah, I guess if we keep plugging away we’ll see a positive number show up there eventually.
Sara: Yeah, it sure will change and I’m not sure how advertisers would be able to tell the truth worth of a site. Sure, the web site owners who are web savvy won’t have a problem picking and choosing what sites to advertise on, but what about the people on their own who are not web savvy? How will they know what sites to advertise on without Page Rank? If it happens, it could be the start of a new business opportunity for someone to consult with advertisers on what site’s would be best for them to pursue advertising on. (Maybe there already is a service like this?)
Andreas: Yeah I remember a while back when your blog dropped to a 3, but I didn’t realize it dropped again to a 2. Sorry to hear that. It seems these are the only stories I’ve read, where Page Rank dropped. I’ve yet to hear from someone who’s Page Rank actually increased.

I know just how you feel. I sat at PR 1 for what seemed like forever. Now I’m still just a 2 and I’ve been looking at it and getting bent out of shape for months. I’ve been working hard at increasing it for the past few months though. It can be frustrating to sit at a low PR for a long time while you are working like a dog. Especially when these days a 4 seems to be considered entry level. Sheesh.

Ryan: Yeah, you’re definitely right about that! Seems like unless you’re above a Page Rank 4 you get no love. Makes me wish I would have started blogging earlier.

You know google really surprises me, indeed. My ex page rank is 3, but it has deceased to 0 many months. Otherwise, at the moment mine is 4.. ahah i get one score for bonus...

I think you have a big fat PR 4, so many rumours have been flying around. The folks at Google probably think it’s hilarious. Both of my blogs got 4’s as well. Which is awesome. I thought I was given a zero and was going to have to wait for the next update. Anyway Congrats! Emma

Yup, Emma’s right. looks like a nice shiny new 4 to me.

Well, if that doesn’t cheer you up, I don’t know what will

Daravuth: Hey congratulations on your 4!
Emma: Thanks for pointing that out! I’ve been out of town for the weekend so I had no idea. Congrats to you as well for your 4!
Sara: Yep, looks like a 4 to me too! Yippy!
Armen: Yeah, it definitely makes me happy to see a 4 there instead of a zero!
BTW: Very nice redesign my friend.

I can relate-its an addiction trying to increase page rank-but it also drives me crazy!

Scott: Yep, it’s definitely an addiction sometimes. Now that this blog received a 4 in pagerank, it’s not so much of a big deal anymore to me. I don’t really worry about it. I think when you’re sitting at a PR 0 you are just addicted to receiving at least some kind of pagerank.

My name is Deron Sizemore and I am a web designer, web publisher, blogger and serial internet entrepreneur living in Lexington, Kentucky.

I’ve heard a few rumors that Google may do-away with the page rank, but that’s it. Just, “I heard that Google may do away with Page Rank.” I’ve never heard any details.
But if Google does can the Page Rank system, things could get hairy in the ranking world.
Technorati doesn’t account for web sites (non-blogs), so that wouldn’t be a good measure.
Alexa is very subjective, and non-tech savvy web sites would get the short end of the stick.
Google Search Ranks are also very subjective. Apparently, the older your URL is, the better it does in Search Engine Ranking.
The only thing that leaves is your page hits - which can be manipulated.
So I don’t know what would replace the Google Page Rank system. So I sure hope Google doesn’t do away with it.
But maybe, they have something brewing up behind the scenes, that they are going to replace the Page Rank system with.
*shrugs*
Who knows.
The only thing we can do is wait, keep posting quality content, and keep hoping for links.
Good luck on that acquiring that first Page Rank Deron!
You deserve it!
Oh, and I agree with you.
Rankings is not what drives me, but it’s what drives advertizers. And money isn’t what drives me. But blogging takes time and costs money, so it would be nice to get some suppliment.
