Random Jabber Downtime and New Icons

I just wanted to write a quick article and let everyone know that I’ve been having some real issues with my current host. For the last couple weeks I’ve been experiencing some serious downtime and I’m in the process of possibly changing hosts, because I can’t have this.

I wanted to give everyone a heads up as I’m sure it’s frustrating to try to navigate here and get the ol’ “Page Cannot be Displayed” message. I know I hate it. So, with that said, I appreciate your patience on this and I hope everyone sticks around as Random Jabber isn’t going anywhere, just having some growing pains.

I’m also currently working on my own icon set which I hope to release sometime at the end of this week or early next week, so stay tuned for that. Everyone can use more icons, right? Oh, and did I mention they will be free? Yeah, even better right?

Sounds great!  Thanks for the heads up!
I’ll keep that in mind if I get that most annoying error.

And I’m looking forward to those icons!  I like what I’ve seen of your image design.  Good luck with ‘em!

That can be frustrating.  Who are you using?

Brian: Thanks for the well wishes! Hopefully everyone enjoys the icons. It’s hard when designing icons and similar objects to really get original because they have all be done before but we’ll see how it goes.

Daravuth: Thanks! Glad you’re sticking around and waiting for them! smile

Susan: Yes, very frustrating. I expect some downtime, but when it’s everyday it’s getting ridiculous. I know I’ve got to be losing visitors because of it.

Right now I’m with A Small Orange who I’ve advertised and recommended to everyone I’ve talked to for hosting, but now I’m not so sure. I’m in talks with EngineHosting which is the same people that make ExpressionEngine CMS that I’m using and from what I understand, their hosting is top of the line. Of course, I heard A Small Orange was top of the line before I signed on with them too, so that’s what kinda scares me. A Small Orange has been great about fixing problems quickly and keeping us informed of problems, but that still doesn’t fix the fact that it’s down.

A new icon set? I’ve been looking for some new icons. Awesome link bait on your end smile.

For hosting - I’ve noticed your blog down a couple of times over the past couple of weeks (since meeting you on TBE). I use a hosting company whom I keep all of my projects and clients on called HostGator.com. I’ve used them for four years with no issues and no down time. That would be my recommendation if you are in the market.

Paul: Great, hopefully you’ll like what I’ve designed and spread the word that they are the greatest things since sliced bread! wink

I had thought about going with HostGator originally but went with A Small Orange because of all the great things I had heard about them. If/when I go through with the change, I’ll have to consider HostGator as an option. I really just don’t want to go through the hassle of moving everything to a new host, but it may be inevitable.

Shaun: Yeah, you’re right, it definitely shouldn’t be happening and unfortunately from the look of things at the hosts online forum, I’m not the only unhappy camper. Hopefully it will be fixed soon because A Small Orange really does good business and I know they’re working on it, but when you’re running a site and it’s down a lot, it can’t get fixed quick enough.

Benedict: Thanks! I’m glad I’ve got at least a few who will stick with me through this rough time. At least the downtime hasn’t completely scared everyone off. smile

Yeah, the word FREE will get interest every time! wink

I was looking at Site5 originally for a host, but heard a lot of not so good things about them, but I guess like anything, it’s all in who you ask. If someone is offering some sort of goods, chances are there will be people with positive experiences and negative ones also. I’ll keep them in mind.

Deron - You’re welcome!  As you said, everyone will have their own positive and negative feels. Even I can agree that.. I was leaning towards Site5 since it is much better than my previous host (HostDime) so my thoughts are more relative! I’ve been with Site5 for almost 3 months now and I had only couple of downtimes. that two matter of minutes (my site monitoring tool was indeed great to capture that downtime as well. Else I wouldn’t have noticed it).  Also one more thing which prompted me to recommend was “the support is ready to answer any kind of questions and will have a solution if you have any problem”

I use EngineHosting for almost all my clients’ sites and they are great. I’ve been considering moving my personal site to EngineHosting, since I like you, experience random outages, or worse yet, taking minutes for a page to load, because the server is too busy. I haven’t moved it yet, because I’d need a different plan than $9.95/mo to host my videos, pictures, and music clips. The nice thing about PHPWebHosting is that they don’t care how much storage space you use; and they have been good to work with. They’re just not reliable in terms of server performance.

Alnisa: Well, I decided to go with EngineHosting for my new host. I’m pretty excited about it because I’ve never heard a bad thing about them, and thus far, the support is great. My account is set up so hopefully I’ll get to move everything over in the next few days.
