Report: Google to Acquire Earth
Google acquiring Earth is the heading that I expect to see sometime in the near future. If you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, I’ll let enlighten you, Google has been buying seemingly any and every company under the sun.
Let the Acquisitions Begin
It started in 2001 when Google acquired Deja’s Usenet archive and turned it into Google Groups. From there, Google acquired companies like I acquire RSS feeds. Google has acquired more companies than I’m sure a lot of people realize, but a few of the main acquisitions that I’m sure people will recognize are:
- Pyra Labs (Blogger)
- Picasa
- Urchin Software (Google Analytics)
- YouTube
- DoubleClick
- FeedBurner
and now ImageAmerica, which has previously provided images to Google’s Earth and Map service.
Will It Ever End?
As the saying goes, “Never put all of your eggs in one basket.” Google definitely is putting their eggs in as many baskets as possible, but do they have to many baskets? I think they may be reaching that point, but really, who am I to question a multi-billion dollar company? I am sure they know what they’re doing, but it seems to me that eventually, if this trend of acquiring continues, they could potentially be spread to thin. They would be a jack of all trades, but an expert in none. The quality of their applications may drop as a result, and ultimately, that’s the end of Google. Now, that may never happen, and if it did, it wouldn’t be for a very long time, but I definitely think it could happen. What do you think?
Be on the Lookout
If Google doesn’t slow down, the next news headline may read: “Report: Google acquires Earth.”

Yeah, you’re right. Some of the most intelligent people in the world are there, and they’ll do fine as long as they keep the quality of their products up. Once the quality falls, so does the people using the products and applications.

I don’t think Google will ever spread too thin. Some of the smartest people on the planet work there, and all the companies they buy are already successful.
However, the possibility for Google to go down exists.
